‘The SACN report on Carbohydrates : is it sweet or is it sour?’

Abstract

In June 2014, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) released the long-awaited draft report on carbohydrates. There was considerable media and professional interest in their recommendations to lower targets for population intakes of free sugars to 5%, and to increase population intakes of fibre to 30g. The report also contains many other conclusions on the latest science on carbohydrates in the diet. This session presents both details and highlights from the 365 page main report, and considers how dietitians many be challenged in their role in communicating SACN recommendations.
