Speaker Biography

Elaine has twenty years experience as a Registered Dietitian, and has worked in Mental Health and Eating Disorders over the course of her career.  She is meetings organiser for The Mental Health group of BDA.  Elaine has also worked in Specialist diabetes service  for the past five years, and is particularly interested in integrating mental health and physical health services for people with comorbidities.  In 2013,  Elaine`s team were Winners in the category of Best Innovation in Service Provision, at  UK Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Awards.   Elaine is a Qualified teacher and is a Registered Sport & Exercise Dietitian ( SeNR) and has written several peer reviewed journal articles.  She is currently undertaking a Diploma in Group Work, through the Institute of Group Analysis.

‘How does patient self-management for chronic disease, translate into practice for people with mental health & learning disabilities?’

Abstract

The challenges of managing chronic physical health conditions e.g. diabetes, obesity for people with mental illness/learning disabilities will be discussed.  The inequalities in health outcomes will be reviewed,  and the evidence for the challenges faced by people in self-management with co exiting mental illness.  Current evidenced based interventions will be presented.  An overview of the current dietetic workforce in mental health in UK will be discussed.
